Deadly Dads and Lullabies in Lingo is an evolution of the award winning strategy Mubali. Following the overwhelming success of Mubali and the positive impact the project had on the young mums and raising awareness in the broader community about the importance of ante-natal care and parenting, the young dads wanted to seize their opportunity to create positive messages and change within their families. So, in collaboration with the Gamilaroi Midwifery Strategy, Deadly Dads and Lullabies in Lingo was conceptualised.
The young dads and elders in the community were mentored by a professional artist / composer and collectively they created a CD of lullabies in English and Gamilaroi. They collected traditional songs and composed contemporary lullabies in lingo. The participants were involved in the processes of composing and recording. The CD contains health and cultural stories about birthing and the experiences of parenting. Mums and dads, children and elders were all involved in music composition, singing and storytelling. Excerpts were played on local radio as community announcements.
Using photography, Deadly Dads also created a series of posters promoting their relationships with their children.
The project was showcased through community launches of the CD and posters, helping to raise awareness about the importance of dads in good parenting.
