Beyond Empathy (BE) Is a grass roots, relatively small organisation that intentionally uses community, arts and cultural development (CACD) practice to influence change in the lives of individuals and communities whose life cycles have been disrupted by disadvantage. BE uses the arts to address a range of seemingly intractable individual and community issues, working one-on-one with participants to help them explore how these issues impact their lives, their families and their communities. Arts led processes are used to connect these people with support workers and broker relationships between them. BE is committed to building high-quality, participatory arts programs that become the catalyst for partnerships with community based organisations with long-term outcomes. BE has received awards for this innovative approach to using the arts to enhance community wellbeing:
- 2011 National Leadership in Arts and Health Award for Excellence
- 2011 Health Promotion and the Arts Award for Excellence (Just One Less)
- 2010 Arts and Health in Rural and Regional Australia Award for Excellence
- 2006 Inspirational Social Entrepreneur Award - Kim McConville, Social Ventures Australia
- 2005 Baxter Consumer Participation Award, NSW Department of Health (Mubali)
BE runs CACD projects in highly disadvantaged communities in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria including:
- Armidale, NSW
- Moree, NSW
- Bowraville, NSW
- Illawarra including Bundaleer and Berkeley, NSW
- Tennant Creek, NT
